The Catholic community of Clarion and beyond is mourning the passing of a beloved shepherd, Father Monty Sayers, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish. Fr. Monty, who faithfully served the Church and its people for decades, passed away peacefully at Penn Highlands Hospital in DuBois after a prolonged battle with illness. He was 72 years old.
Father Monty’s passing leaves a profound void not only in his parish but across the Diocese, where his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith touched countless lives. Known for his compassionate spirit, gentle humor, and deep commitment to his vocation, Fr. Monty spent his life bringing people closer to Christ, whether from the pulpit, in the confessional, at the altar, or simply in everyday conversations.
Born and raised with a strong sense of faith and community, Monty Sayers felt the call to the priesthood at a young age. After his ordination, he embarked on a lifetime of service to the Church, offering not just sacraments, but true companionship and spiritual leadership to all those entrusted to his care. Over the years, he served at several parishes, but it was at Immaculate Conception in Clarion that he truly made his spiritual home, becoming an irreplaceable part of the lives of his parishioners.
Throughout his tenure, Fr. Monty was known for his thoughtful homilies, which often blended profound theological insights with practical, everyday wisdom. He had a way of speaking to the heart, encouraging his congregation to live their faith authentically and courageously. Parishioners recall his warmth and approachability—whether leading a Bible study, visiting the sick, celebrating weddings and baptisms, or simply chatting after Mass, he made every person feel seen, heard, and loved.
Even in his final months, as he faced significant health challenges, Fr. Monty remained steadfast in his commitment to his parish family. His faith never wavered, and his courage became a source of inspiration to all who witnessed his journey. He continued to pray fervently, trusting in God’s will, and offering his sufferings for the good of others.
The Diocese issued a statement following his passing, expressing deep sorrow and gratitude for Fr. Monty’s life of service:
“We mourn the loss of our dear brother in Christ, Father Monty Sayers. We give thanks for his tireless devotion to the Gospel and the lives he enriched through his ministry. We pray for the repose of his soul and for comfort and peace for his family, friends, and parish community. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.”
As news of his death spread, parishioners gathered at Immaculate Conception to pray the Rosary and celebrate the life of their beloved pastor. Plans are underway for a funeral Mass, which is expected to draw clergy, friends, and faithful from across the region who wish to pay their respects and offer their gratitude for a life so well lived in service to God.
Father Monty Sayers leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, love, and hope. His life was a testament to the power of perseverance, kindness, and the quiet but profound influence of a soul dedicated wholly to Christ. While his earthly journey has ended, his spirit will remain alive in the community he loved so dearly.
May we honor his memory by living our lives with the same humility, compassion, and faithfulness that he modeled every day. And may his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
